Salzer Tannery Museum

The derelict building of the former Salzer Tannery has been restored over the course of the last 15 years thanks to the efforts of about 100 volunteers who invested approx. 40,000 working hours. In the spring of 2015, the state of Styria designated the former tannery a “Styrian landmark”. Over the last two years, the first tannery museum in Austria with approximately 1,000 objects has been established on an exhibition area with a size of 900 m2.

The museum is divided into three topical areas: Tannery, Erzberg as well as Water & Engineering. The tannery museum displays and contrasts past and present artisanal and mechanical leather production processes. The exhibition focusses on well-preserved and restored machines, which includes an impressive splitting and shaving machine.

In cooperation with the Salzer Tannery, Wollsdorf Leather has contributed leather as donations in kind to the museum and provided informational material related to modern leather production. The exhibits can be viewed on site from May to October.
